Nine composers win British Composer Awards for the first time
Last night the British Composer Awards were held at Goldsmiths' Hall in London. Nine of the winners in 13 categories had never won a British Composer Award before, and Sir Harrison Birtwistle entered the record books by becoming the most shortlisted and awarded composer in the history of the Awards, he won the Vocal category for his Songs from the Same Earth.
The winner of the Orchestral category was Mark-Anthony Turnage (who had, surprisingly, not won a British Composer Award before) for his Frieze, which was commissioned to celebrate the bicentenary of the Royal Philharmonic Society.
Kerry Andrew won two Awards: her opera Dart's Love won the Stage Works category and Woodwose: A Community Chamber Opera won in the Community or Educational Project category.
